Gluten Free Oreo Dirt Cake
Yep, that is correct. You did not read that incorrectly. It says gluten free. In this case, you can absolutely not tell the difference between regular and gluten free. Oreo has done an incredible job with there gluten free cookies.
I am not much for making things gluten free, normally. However, in this case, why not? The cookies taste exactly the same as the original and now when you bring this yummy dessert to your next gathering; everyone can enjoy it!
How is this gluten free?
Well, it is simple… gluten free Oreo’s. Yes, Oreo makes a gluten free variety and it is perfect. It tastes just like the original and it can be enjoyed by all. We love Oreo’s because they are not made in a tree nut facility. So, my daughter can eat them. Now they have come out with so many different varieties that they are super fun to try all of the flavors. Which, on a side note, the S’mores Oreos are to die for.
Even the gluten free Oreo’s are delicious. Plus, you can use them to make amazing desserts gluten free. This is a great crowd-pleasing dessert for your next summer gathering. Why not make it gluten free so that everyone can enjoy it!
What do you need to make dirt cake?
Well, interestingly enough, it is not a cake at all. It is basically pudding and cookies. I like to add a little more substance and flavor to mine. So, you will notice that there are a little more ingredients than just pudding and cookies; but not much.
Basically, I make almost like a cream cheese frosting and then mix that with the pudding and freshly whipped whip cream makes all the difference too. Don’t get me wrong, Cool Whip has it’s place in my kitchen. Yes, you can use it in this recipe. Yet, I like the final product a little better with the freshly whipped whip cream instead.
Unsalted Butter- You are probably asking yourself, butter? really? But yes, you will use it to make the cream cheese frosting mixture. Always use unsalted when it comes to desserts
Cream Cheese- This will give a nice tangy flavor as well as add a more firm texture to your final product
Powdered Sugar- This is to sweeten the cream cheese frosting mixture
Vanilla extract- This is completely optional, but I like the added flavor it gives to the dessert
Vanilla pudding mix- You will need good old fashioned vanilla pudding mix for this recipe
Whole Milk- You can substitute this for whatever type of milk you prefer to drink. I like the creaminess that you get from the whole milk though
Heavy cream- This is if you are making the freshly whipped whip cream for your dirt cake. If not, you will use Cool Whip instead
Gluten Free Oreo’s- You will crush these in the food processor or with a bag and a rolling pin. This is the dirt in your dirt cake
Gluten free or regular Gummy worms – These are optional decorations, but really make the whole cake really cute
You can see you don’t need much to make this fun and yummy dessert. Plus, everyone will love it.
Chef’s Tips-
I don’t have too many tips here. The first is to make that basic cream cheese frosting light and airy, so whip the cream cheese and the butter really well before adding in the powdered sugar. The next thing is to make sure the cream is whipped to stiff peaks and fold it into the other ingredients as to not deflate the cream. This will give your finished product a nice light and airy quality.
Make sure that you get the crumb very fine on the Oreo’s. Not only for the look, but they will eat better in the final dessert. Lastly, make sure that you make this dessert at least one day ahead of time. It will not have much flavor if made and then served right away. If you make it and assemble it the day before, you will get the best dirt cake flavor. Add your gummy worms on before you serve this or they will get hard in the fridge. ENJOY!
